Tom Scamell: Authenticity in Every Note

    Tom Scamell

Born in the South-west of the UK, in a quiet village of just 20 residents, singer-songwriter and guitarist Tom Scamell has built his career with a clear sense of direction. In 2024, his performances on TikTok reached over 20 million viewers, bringing him to a global audience and attracting interest from major record labels. His interpretations of Sultans of Swing and Johnny B. Goode gained attention for their feel and attention to detail, staying close to the spirit of the originals while carrying his own voice.

Inspired by his father’s love of guitar music, Scamell first picked up the instrument at ten.

“There wasn’t much to do where I grew up, and I wasn’t allowed to play video games… so guitar was the priority.”

From early on, his playing leaned toward blues phrasing and rhythm, with a focus on timing and touch. A defining part of his style is the way he blends rhythm and lead playing, often covering both roles at once, holding down a groove while weaving in melodic lines. In a stripped-back setting, this allows the guitar to fill space naturally, without relying on a supporting band.

That same approach carries into his setup. Rather than building around complex pedalboards, Scamell keeps things simple: a good amp and his trusted Blackstar HT Drive pedal. The focus remains on the hands rather than the gear, with tone shaped through dynamics and playing rather than layers of effects.

Following his online breakthrough, attention turned to his original material. His debut single, “Your Face,” and the forthcoming EP, Building Bridges, mark that next step, with the next track, “Put a Man Down,” released on 4th March. Written during his first period living in London, the songs reflect a time of adjustment, balancing music with day-to-day life and finding direction in a new environment.

Alongside his solo work, Scamell has been writing with American songwriter and artist Kaleb Cohen, contributing to upcoming projects. These sessions have added to a growing catalogue of material, much of which is soon to be released.

Live performance remains central to his work. Often performing acoustically or in a stripped-back trio, his sets place the focus on voice and guitar. With rhythm and lead combined into a single part, there is little separation between accompaniment and melody, giving the performance a continuous, flowing feel.

At the Ealing Blues Festival, he played to a crowd of over 2,000 people, moving between blues standards and original songs without changing that approach. The same setup – voice, guitar, and minimal backing held across the set, with the guitar carrying both the structure and detail of each song.

His recent live work has included supporting Zak Starkey and opening for Leland Sklar, placing him alongside musicians with long-standing careers in live and recorded music. These performances have become part of a growing list of live credits.

He has also performed at screenings of Becoming Led Zeppelin and the Immediate Family documentary, including events at Riverside Studios in London. These shows sit alongside his regular live work, connecting performance with the history of the music that informs it.

His debut headline show at the iconic Troubadour in London marked a significant milestone. The venue, long associated with historic performances, including early UK appearances by Bob Dylan, provided a fitting backdrop for Scamell’s first major statement as a headliner. Backed by his US bandmates, the show sold out.

With his debut EP scheduled for release, further collaborations underway, and plans to join Kaleb Cohen’s band as guitarist and opening act on a US East Coast tour, Scamell’s focus remains on writing, recording, and performing.

At the core of Tom Scamell’s journey is a commitment to authenticity, whether through the nuanced phrasing of his guitar, the honesty of his songwriting, or the raw energy of his live performances. In an era often defined by rapid trends and digital noise, his dedication to musical tradition and genuine expression sets him apart as an artist with both substance and longevity.
